Then said David to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the ranks of Israel, whom you have defied.”
1 Samuel 17:45–47 (AMP)
The story of David and Goliath is a powerful reminder of where true confidence comes from. While Goliath mocked the God of Israel with physical weapons and intimidation, David responded with something greater: the name of the Lord of Hosts. His boldness was not rooted in his size or skill but in a personal history of divine encounters. David’s confidence came from relationship, not rhetori —“The same God who delivered me from the lion and the bear will deliver me from this Philistine.”
In Scripture, names carry deep meaning. A name is a marker of identity and power. Throughout the Bible, God revealed Himself through different names—Jehovah Jireh, Jehovah Rapha, El Roi—each one revealing a dimension of His character and faithfulness in real-life situations. These were not just titles; they were testimonies of relationships.
In today’s world of uncertainty, we often invoke the name of Jesus, but the question is: Do we know Him, or are we just using His name in emergencies? The power in the name of Jesus is released through relationship, not repetition. Like David, we are called to stand against the giants in our lives—not in our own strength, but through faith in the One we walk with daily.
When you know the name, you trust the character. And when you trust the character, you face every Goliath with assurance. So, in whose name are you living, fighting, and declaring? Let it be in the name you know, not just the name you’ve heard.
