“Thus the Lord gave to Israel all the land that He swore to give to their fathers. And they took possession of it, and they settled there. And the Lord gave them rest on every side just as He had sworn to their fathers. Not one of all their enemies had withstood them, for the Lord had given all their enemies into their hands. Not one word of all the good promises that the Lord had made to the house of Israel had failed; all came to pass.”
— Joshua 21:43-45 (ESV)
The story of Israel’s inheritance is one marked by seasons of hardship, triumph, discipline, miracles, and the undeniable presence of God. The land that God promised was only received after much tribulation, battles, miracles, punishments, death, sickness, and perseverance. In this journey, they experienced the full spectrum of human challenges — yet God remained faithful.
This mirrors the Christian journey today. Though the Promised Land was a physical inheritance for Israel, it is also a symbol of the New Jerusalem — the eternal home prepared for the saints of God. As believers, we are on a pilgrimage through this life, filled with rising and falling, learning patience, enduring trials, and growing in faith.
We are reminded that our TRUE REST is not found in this world, but in Christ Jesus, and will be fully realized on the day of the Lord. Until then, we persevere. We hold on to God’s promises, trusting that not one word of His good promises will fail. Every trial shapes us, every battle builds us, and every victory reminds us that our final inheritance is secure in Him.
Prayer: Father, we pray for strength and grace for Your church today. Help us to persevere and remain steadfast in the faith as we await Your triumphant return. Give us peace in our hearts and rest from our sufferings. Teach us to trust in Your promises and to lean on Your Word, knowing that every good word You have spoken will surely come to pass. May we stand firm, filled with hope, until we enter into the fullness of Your promised rest.
